Memorials made to the Decatur Education Foundation in Betty Carson's name were used to start a new literacy initiative in DISD! The Decatur Education Foundation wanted to create a lasting legacy for Mrs. Carson involving one of her most passionate causes, reading.
With payment from the initiative, each of our pre-kindergarten students was able to take home one book from the book fair to add to their home library. Research shows that academic achievement is directly tied to the amount of print in the home.
The DEF plans to give books to each pre-k student at each annual fall and spring book fair. Each semester the program will cost approximately $1000.
