Migrant Services

What is a Migrant Worker?

  • Migrant workers seek seasonal or temporary employment in the areas of agriculture, processing of crops dairy products, poultry, livestock, nurseries or any other activity related to the cultivation or harvesting of trees or fishing. When families are required to move from place to place, it tends to disrupt the education of the children within those families.

  • The Migrant Education Program is a national program which provides supplemental education and supportive services to eligible migrant students to help them overcome educational disruptions and/or disadvantages.

  • The Migrant Education Program grew out of Title I of Public Law 89-10, passed in 1965 and has been amended over the years. Currently, the Migrant Education Program is reauthorized under the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Act.

  • Migratory Child: for funding purposes, the term migratory child means a child, age 3-11, who is or whose parent, spouse, or guardian is a migratory agricultural worker, or a migratory fisher, and who, in the preceding 36 months has moved from one district to another in order to obtain temporary or seasonal employment in agriculture or fishing work. It is the goal of the Migrant Education Program to assist these students and their families to overcome the everyday challenges of social isolation, cultural and language barriers, and other difficulties associated with migratory life. The program is designed to help such students succeed in school and successfully transition into post-secondary education.
